Why You Should Be An “Awkward Patient”

by JW on September 27, 2011

Awkward PatientDo You Do As You're Told at the Doctor's or Hospital?

I was talking to a friend who's due to go to hospital soon for an operation and we got talking about looking after ourselves at these times. I think she meant in ways like having her husband take in some decent food – obviously that's a great idea. She mentioned that she would take in some ear plugs so that she could hopefully get some sleep – also a good idea I thought.

I don't suppose, though, that she had given any thought to how assertive she should be and how this could be the most important aspect of her stay. Do any of us give any thought to how we'll "stick up" for ourselves or have we subconsciously prepared ourselves to "do as we're told" and be as compliant as possible so as not to cause a "fuss" or be a problem/awkward patient.

Let me ask you a couple of questions then:

Do you think the people caring for you are any different than you or I? Do you really think they are infallible and incapable of making a mistake? Do you think they don't get tired or frustrated? Do you think they are immune to being distracted?

The men and women looking after you, whether that's at the Doctor's surgery, the pharmacy or the hospital are human, just like you and I.

In a Department of Health's report into patient safety reported from a study of medical records that up to 10% of admissions had suffered some form of harm. You can see more of that report here

That's far too many for me!

Given the chances of something not being quite right, I think I'm justified in asking anyone and yes, that includes the consultant surgeon, if they've washed their hands before examining me. After all, if they haven't, I'm the one at risk of infection – maybe even MRSA which could kill me. I don't have a problem asking what drugs I am being given and what they are for – I for one don't want to blindly swallow something in case it wasn't actually for me but for the patient in the next bed!

So how much does it take for you to start looking after yourself? If you know your injection should be red and someone approaches you with a syringe of blue liquid are you going to wait until it's in your vein?

Just saying!

EU Regulations on Herbal Medicines

by JW on May 5, 2011

Herbal MedicinesThe EU has brought in new Legislation Regarding Herbal Medicines

Although there has been a lot of negativity about these new rules – uproar even, about natural medicines being banned, what is the reality? How many people complaining about it have actually been on the EU website to read about the legislation for themselves first-hand?

Here are a few things you might not be aware of/have forgotten/don't consciously think about:

Just because something's "natural" doesn't mean it's safe for you to consume – many drugs originate from natural substances, such as aspirin (originally extracted from willow bark) and digoxin (a heart medication which comes from the foxglove plant, digitalis lanata). I'm sure you wouldn't pick a toadstool and put it in your mouth just because it's natural!

This regulation isn't about the indiscriminate banning of products! The regulation is about safety and quality – for you, the consumer. Without quality and safety measures, you cannot be entirely sure about what you are buying.

If I'm going to use a herbal remedy, I want to know that it is safe for me to use, and have some confidence in it doing what I want it to do, ie; evidence of its efficacy would be good – otherwise, what's the point?! However, safety and efficacy are two different things. A capsule could contain nothing but sugar and would be safe for me to swallow but it wouldn't do anything for my health. This new regulation is concerned that products should have sufficient evidence of medicinal use for at least 30 years with 15 of those being of use in the EU.

In the past when natural/herbal/dietary supplements have been tested, they have ranged from good to bad to a complete waste of money. This is probably why this type of product hasn't always had a good image and leads some to say that in taking them one is just making expensive urine! So a good product will have in every capsule in every pot, exactly what it says on the label – and contain nothing that is not on the label. Unfortunately, past tests have shown that some products have had NONE of the active ingredient (so that's your expensive urine product then!) – this is such a shame for the person who could benefit from that product but now considers it less than useless! Some products however, and this could be equally if not more worrying, have had multiple times the active ingredient – you have no idea how much you're taking then! Some products have ranged widely in the amount of active ingredient in the capsules – within the same pot!

So one of the issues this new regulation is concerned with is quality. I for one want to be assured that products I buy are not only what they claim to be but that they are not contaminated with anything that's not on the label. To be sure of this, look for products which are manufactured to GMP (good manufacturing practices) – but the new regulations should now do this on your behalf.

The new rules are about efficacy and quality and don't ban traditional medicines, or therapies or therapists from the EU.

I know that nothing is ever perfect, and I also have reservations – will a product new to the EU but with 30 years of evidence outside the community ever be able to be sold here? Probably my biggest concern though is the potential re-classification of natural, dietary or herbal remedies as drugs, which may mean we wont be able to have them without a prescription, but that's another matter, for another day.

Prevention or Detection

February 17, 2011

Prevention – What Does That Mean? If I choose to eat healthy food, then that forms a part of my plan to prevent ill health. What concerns me is the focus we seem to have on screening and my feeling is that some people may confuse that with prevention. So much is being made in [...]

How Do You Know You're Healthy? How do we know if we're healthy or not? What does it mean to you to be healthy? Do you assume you're healthy just because you have an absence of symptoms? Having said that, having major cold symptoms is a sign of a healthy immune system fighting off the [...]

An Important Choice

November 16, 2010

But Was the Question Asked? The BBC reported recently about the issue of where people die. You may think this is a morbid subject for this post but don't click away just yet! Dying is something that will eventually happen to all of us and maybe if we were more open about it, it could [...]

Science in Advertising

Do you sometimes find yourself taking things in subconsciously when watching the TV or reading the media? The Healthy Option

September 21, 2010

So You Think You're Choosing the Healthy Option? Are you one of the many consumers confused by labelling? Do you have trouble understanding, with confidence, what is in food products and whether you can believe any of the health benefits claimed for them? For example, you may be encouraged to think that a low fat [...]

Consent

September 13, 2010

Having just watched a recent BBC Panorama programme, about the problems with the drug Avandia I've had to put pen to paper (ok, so I mean fingers to keyboard!) about something that was reported. According to the programme, it seems that there may be an increased risk of heart problems with the Glaxo Smith Kline [...]

Women Putting Health at Risk

August 5, 2010

In a report released recently by the Health Supplements Information Service, women in their 20s and 30s (but I would guess the same applies to all women) are risking their health due to a poor diet and lack of exercise. The study reveals that a significant number of the women surveyed feel tired and stressed [...]
